The Eugène Marquis Cancer Institute of Rennes is one of the 20 centers founded in 1945 and now united in a joint structure, the National Federation of French Cancer Centers.

Public founded and based within the teaching hospital campus of Pontchaillou, it brings together the resources required for its triple mission of health care, education and research in cancer.

Each year, more than 2500 new patients with cancer come to EMCI.

After a first appointment, the medical record of the patient is reviewed by a multidisciplinary medical board including a surgeon, a clinical oncologist, a radiotherapist, a pathologist and a medical imaging specialist.
The case is then discussed and the best therapeutic choice is proposed to the patient through the physician referring the record. The patient will be treated either in the EMCI or elsewhere in the region.

With a highly specialized team and a high standard facilities and equipment, the EMCI offer to its patients:

  • Comprehensive treatment of breast cancer, including surgery
  • Radiotherapy of all kind of diseases, including clinical hematology and pediatric oncology
  • Chemotherapy of solid tumours in adults
  • Therapeutic use of radioactive isotopes, e.g. after surgery of thyroid cancer
  • Medical imaging (PET scan, CT scan, radionuclide scanning, X Ray, Ultrasound, etc.)
  • Lab

Some figures (2007) :

  • 19 289 different patients seen per year, of which 9179 are new patients and 2 520 in-patients
  • 350 employees, among them 43 physicians or pharmacists
  • 69 beds for full time hospitalisation, 15 beds in outpatient clinic and 3 in one-day surgery clinic
  • 4 devices for radiotherapy, delivering 32 591 treatment sessions
  • Brachytherapy
  • 3 operating rooms, 710 surgical procedures for breast tumours performed per year
  • 7 902 chemotherapy treatments delivered

In collaboration with the faculty of medicine and paramedical schools, the EMCI is involved in medical education as well as in the training of paramedics in clinical oncology, radiotherapy and medical imaging.

The EMCI participates in numerous clinical trials.

The EMCI develops a policy of total quality management and was accredited by the HAS (Haute Autorité de Santé) in October 2006.
